May the sun never shine on this day

Dir. Rafał Urbacki, Fredro Theatre in Gniezno, Poland

Once upon a time, maybe a century ago, maybe two centuries or three centuries ago, in a certain kingdom far away….

the king of beggars, monarch of the crippled and the handicapped, of convicts and lunatics, ruler of poverty and contempt, pronounced a curse on the city, joyfully celebrating the day of its patron saint. A city which, in that singular moment, drove all the social ballast outside its gates, and far enough away that it did not crouch back and tarnish the solemn celebration with its sight. “For our sakes, may the sun never shine on this day, may the cold frost chill the pilgrims , and the winds chop cold”.

Taking pity on the unfortunate, God listened to the spell , and to this day, every year St Adalbert welcomes Gniezno with rain and frost.

So much for medieval legend. But don’t we today behave like the councillors of Gniezno, trying to remove from our sight everything that is inconvenient, unattractive or does not fit in with the surroundings? Do we not run away with our eyes when we see a beggar, a homeless person or simply a disabled person? So perhaps it is for us that the sun will never set?

An unusual spectacle#concert featuring artists with an alternative motor. Derived from an old Gniezno tale, it reminds us of the people living among us, – “invisible”, “unnecessary” and very lonely.

Is a legend really just a legend?

Today we are giving them the floor.
