Morgue Polonais
Premiere: 28 November 2025, Scena Robocza Poznaniu
The community needs its dead to connect with the land. We find them in various places: in cemeteries, in street names, history textbooks, costume dramas, or as patrons of schools. A Polish-sounding surname on a foreign gravestone catches our eye: further proof of the country’s existence. We feel a connection with them because we speak the same language, but also because we have similar bodies with the same skin colour and comparable anatomy.
What about those who deviate from this norm? If we cannot see them after death, can we be sure that they ever lived?
In Morgue Polonais, we put them on display. Others, crippled, disabled, abandoned. Following the example of 19th-century Parisian public morgues, we want to delight those who turned away from them during their lifetime after their death. In our Polish morgue, we will try to transport ourselves to various places of collective memory and remind people of those who have been forgotten. We will also perform an autopsy on the normative body of Polish history. Will the memory of it survive, given that the future is disabled? And if, after death, trees grow out of us instead of gravestones, will anyone remember us?
